About us

A family-run sign shop with nearly a century behind it

We're a family-focused bunch here at Sign Central, pushing creative boundaries while creating an individual look for each of our customers, from sales through to creative design and signmaking.

Our proud history

From Spurdle Bros to Sign Central

1931

The business begins life as Spurdle Bros in Hastings.

1960

Long-time employee Jim Moran joins the partnership and the business becomes Spurdle & Moran Signs.

1968

Two apprentices, Brent Cullen and Ross McKee, start their training with the firm.

1973

Following Gordon Spurdle's retirement, the business relocates to Queen Street and is renamed SM Signs under Jim, Brent and Ross.

1999

Ian Clarke of Clarke Signs amalgamates with SM Signs, forming CSM Signs, with Ross staying on.

2016

Sam partners with his father Brent to keep the business family-owned after Ian steps back.

2018

The business becomes Sign Central, the modern sign shop that can really do it all.

2026

A new HP Latex flatbed arrives, and with it 3 Lives: recyclable signage that comes back to us and lives on as saveBOARD, then Future Post fence posts.

A nice detail from along the way: Jim Moran, who joined the business in 1960, stayed active in it right up until retiring at the age of 100 and a half.

How we work

Individual, not one-size-fits-all

Our team spans sales, creative design and signmaking, all committed to delivering outstanding signage and branding that helps you stand out in the crowd. We focus on individuality and customisation in every job, rather than off-the-shelf solutions. And we do all the layout, so you never need to bring a design.
